Union Chapel
We are into December now, and very soon, if
not already, we will be getting into the hustle and bustle of
Christmas.
Of all the holidays in the year, it seems to
me this one has become the busiest and longest in preparation, the
most tiring to go through and causes the greatest anxiety of all
for so many people, and probably also gets a lot of folk into the
deepest debt.
The pressure that Christmas brings to so many
seems to be in contradiction to the whole idea of a holiday. When
I think of holidays, I think of rest and relaxation, gentle and
easy times, when all the pressures of everyday living can be put
aside, even if only for a few days. But it seems all that has gone
from Christmas, and it has, for so many, become a time of worry,
fear, pressure, anxiety and concern. Something has certainly gone
wrong I think.
The Christmas Holiday was established so that
we might remember and celebrate the birth of The Saviour, Jesus
Christ. God became a man to live among us. That should certainly
be a time of joy for all of us.
In the book of Isaiah in chapter 9 speaking
of the coming Messiah, Isaiah wrote “ For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his
government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on
David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.”
If you are one of those for whom Christmas
has become a burden and a worry; perhaps, just perhaps, the reason
is that you have lost sight of what and who you are celebrating.
Jesus says “Come to Me, all you who are weary
and burdened and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and
learn from Me. For I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will
find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is
light.”
I pray that you may know the Peace of God
this Christmas time, in your body, mind and heart and that in Him
you may find that needed rest.
