Scarecrows 2011

The Villainous Masterplan comes together!

The Villainous Masterplan comes together on June 11 -12th!

Another year has flown by and the 2011 Scarecrow Festival is nearly here. I sometimes get asked why we put so much effort into the Scarecrow Weekend and what it's all about.

For me there are three things driving me on:

1. To continue a great community event where we can all meet up in a really friendly atmosphere

2. To promote an event that encourages people to visit our village (and envy us!)

3. To generate cash (from outside of the village if possible) for local projects, charities and causes

This is truly a team effort and we have a great team that works throughout the year preparing for the “big weekend”, with an army of volunteers and builders that make the weekend work. We hope that everyone in the village can be part of the event, here's how you can join up:

Building: registration closed on May 13th and we reached our maximum limit of 90 scarecrows! If your not building this year, how about next year?

Volunteering: join the ever growing army of burger flippers, tea-tenters, Pimms pourers, marquee erectors and car-parkers.

Bake a cake: a signature of our weekend is the marvellous array of cakes which are donated on the weekend from all corners of the village and generate a significant portion of the funds we can raise. All donations welcome

So what's happening this year?

6th - 10th June – Site preparation (Bunting, Signs, Marquee, etc) – Help needed!

10th June – Swing & Jazz with the BJ Band, with the lovely acoustics of St.Peter's church

11th / 12th June - The Scarecrow trail:

Requesting funds: last year we were able to help the Playing Fields Assoc., the village school, the Church and the Chapel, the Tennis Club, Greathouse, Helping Hands and the Chippenham Air Cadets. If you are involved in a local charity or community club or need funding for a project that will benefit others please get in touch as soon as possible (preferably via the website).

Will villainous scarecrows really take over our village?

By Stephanie Briggs

With the quota now full to bursting – a record number of 90 scarecrows have been pledged for build – the question is, can we pull it off?  I for one merrily attended the scarecrow workshop where I actually built a proper scarecrow [without using a melon for a head and a bamboo stick for a body].  I built a carpet-headed ersatz human and carried it proudly back home where it’s now nestling in the corner of the garage.  All well and good?  Not really.  Problem is, it’s not a bit scary.  OK, let me correct that statement, I’ve dropped one cup of tea and bounced a plant pot off my foot when walking into the garage on account of “the fat man in the corner with extremely small feet” taking me by surprise.  But stick him on the green come the day, and he’ll look better placed with a bag of Werthers Originals than he will with a blood soaked razor.

I could of course hide him around the village so that he scares people with his unexpected presence?  But that’ll scupper the planning.  I could stick a mask over his kind face but now I’ve gone to the trouble of making a proper scarecrow I’m reluctant.  I’m hoping that come creation day/finishing touches weekend I’ll get an evil glint in my eye and I’ll turn that kind old man into a human-eating machine that’ll rival any scary film.  I can hope for that, and I will, I’ll hope ever-so hard.

I know I’m not the only one with this problem.  And I know that there are some that haven’t even started creating a monstrous being: registration being a hard enough feat to remember in itself [yep, I’m with you on that one], BUT with only a few days until 11th-12th June you need to get a wriggle on.

Will we get that proud-feeling again, you know, the one that lots of people felt when watching the Royal Wedding?  Knowing that when we island-dwellers really try we can do a very good job of stuff.  When Kington Langley tries it can pull off an excellent Scarecrow weekend [I had that proud feeling last year] but then last year we didn’t have the job of making everything look scary.  I know if inspiration doesn’t strike then my scarecrow will run the risk of being mistaken for Father Christmas but Father Christmas wielding a knife?  I guess I’ll be halfway there …
