The fund-raising Ceilidh held
at the Village Hall on the 17th May last was very successful.
After paying all our expenses, the profit from the ticket sales,
the raffle and the bar, amounted to £530.89. An excellent result
thanks to the support of villagers, the hard work of the
committee, Dennis Gill at the bar and, of course, Steve Howe and
his Ceilidh Band 'The Jellied Reels'. The money raised was to be
spent specifically on replacing swing seats, the seesaw and other
pieces of equipment in the Children's Playground.
Now the bad news! During the
week-end of 17th-18th June vandals broke into the Pavilion,
destroyed doors and furniture, damaged one of the showers and
discharged a fire extinguisher (powder type) throughout the
building. They also damaged a cast-iron and wood seat situated by
the Toddlers' Play Area to such an extent that we have had to
clear the remnants away. However, we will provide a replacement
when funds are available. The clear up and repairs will use up
virtually all our profits from the Ceilidh. Also, during the same
week-end, cars were damaged in the Village Hall Car Park as was
the public telephone box situated in Church Road. Some damage also
occurred at the Church.
However, all is not bad news.
Some villagers will have noticed that cricket is again being
regularly played on the playing fields. We have agreed that the
Kington St. Michael Cricket Club should use our grounds to play
their home matches. The Captain and Secretary, Brendan McCarron,
would welcome any enquiry from villagers of King ton Langley who
may wish to join their team. At the time of writing a number of
villagers have shown an interest.
Next Football Season both
Chippenham West Football Club and Christian Malford Footballers
will be using our pitch on alternative weekends, resulting in an
increase of use and income. Our Croquet and Tennis Clubs would
also welcome new members from the village.
Despite some setbacks we
enthusiastically support and encourage all our village sports and
will continue to do so.
