Neighbourhood Watch

Please be Alert, Vigilant and Report anything suspicious

The West Wiltshire Community Safety Partnership has issued a leaflet titled “Unacceptable anti-social behaviour in Kington Langley area”. This leaflet has been partially distributed and copies are available at a number of public venues. The main points are:

It is clear that most incidents are not reported.

Please – we need your help. We need to know where and when these incidents are happening - we need to know who is involved.

Reports can be made to Wiltshire Police on 0845 408 7000 or anonymously on 0800 555111

online at crimestoppers-uk.org/in-your-area/south-west/wiltshire

Please remain Alert, Vigilant and Report anything suspicious.

It appears to have been a quiet month; at least nothing has appeared on my horizon. There has been some vandalism – a door broken and defacement of the sports pavilion and damage to the fence at the top of footpath 4 (Morrell Lane). Vandalism of this sort results in a cost to the village.

Please be Alert, Vigilant and Report anything suspicious

Distraction Burglaries never go away, there are always people open to the main chance. If you are in doubt about cold callers or even arranged visits, please get a neighbour round for a cup of tea; if there is more than one caller a friend can keep an eye on the others. The usual modus operandi is that one caller engages the single occupant while the other does the ‘business’.

Please be Alert, Vigilant and Report anything suspicious

Please look after your purses and wallets when in town, this applies in supermarkets too. The supermarket is a friendly place where we can often meet people we know, however, there are those who prove that such places provide easy pickings.

Please note that the Post Box for the Neighbourhood Police Team has not been installed at the Village Hall. A new site is being sought.

It is hoped that by the time this magazine is published there will be a post box for the Neighbourhood Policing Team installed in the Village Hall.

There has been a distraction burglary within the village. I should like all vulnerable people to get a friend or neighbour to attend if they are approached by strangers

Please be Alert, Vigilant and Report anything suspicious

I pointed out at the Parish Meeting that Neighbourhood Watch was inaugurated in 1983 with thirteen co-ordinators. Currently there are eight! Ideally for 340 dwellings we should have twenty-eight! Half of the dwellings are covered at present and half of those by two people. Getting people to show any interest in becoming area co-ordinators over the years has failed to bring forward anybody! So we come down to asking the Parish Council for a ruling, should the village:

a)     Carry on as at present with a few people taking any interest?

b)    Have a Village co-ordinator without area co-ordinators using the magazine and web site?

c)     Disband Neighbourhood Watch within the village?

Will the Neighbourhood Policing Teams be a suitable substitute? At present they are under strength!

The question of whether to continue the Neighbourhood Watch was raised at the Annual Parish Meeting on the 25th March, no decision has been made at the time this copy was written. The Neighbourhood Policing Team is carrying on their work within the village.

As previously commented, ‘there is a requirement for Area Co-Ordinators’ (November 2006). A Co-Ordinator in place means we can disseminate information more quickly within the village. Some 177 dwellings are covered by eight Co-Ordinators (12 dwellings is considered reasonable, not 21), 160 are not covered at all!

                                                                     Dennis Gill, January 08

Vandalism is occurring in the vicinity of the Village Hall and Playing Field and a number of cars have been scratched; this leads to great expense to individuals and some of which is indirectly paid by the whole village. Vandalism costs money and some of it may be yours.

Distraction Burglaries are still being carried out in parts of Wiltshire, be aware that this can happen anywhere at anytime.

                                                                  Dennis Gill, December 07

Nothing much to report this month; just the usual reminders as the nights draw in:

a)     Distraction Burglaries
b)    Personal and Property Security
c)     One should keep ones guard up at all times, vigilance should become a habit.

We are fortunate to live in a relatively crime free area. There are still vacancies for Area Co-ordinators within the village.

The usual problems continue and one must keep ones guard up at all times, vigilance should become a habit. We are fortunate to live in a relatively crime free area and we hope to keep it crime free.

There are still vacancies for area co-ordinators within the village.

Distraction Burglaries are still being carried out within Wiltshire, usually by two people posing as Utility Representatives; it is not always obvious that there are two people involved, as usually one presents themselves at the door. Should you admit someone into your home, make sure you close the door behind him and also ensure that your back door is shut

There are still vacancies for area co-ordinators within the village.

Many of you are probably aware that Heather has circulated a Wish List “Are there 3 problems in your community that you think the Police should be looking at?” these can be answered by returning the List to the Hit or Miss or to Heather Barham at Corsham Police Station, Priory Street, Corsham, SN13 OAY, or by email as shown above.

Dennis Gill,  July 07

By next month I will have details of the Neighbourhood Policing Team for the Chippenham North area.

There are continuing incidents of fly-tipping and other anti-social behaviour in the village. Anyone observing such behaviour should not approach the offenders, but make a note of the number and description of any vehicles used and the number of persons and a description if possible. This can be reported to a member of Neighbourhood Watch, a Parish Councillor or the Police on 0845 408 7000. Any information gathered may appear fairly innocuous but when fitted in with other information can result in successful action being taken.

Be aware that distraction burglaries (usually posing as utility representatives) are still occurring within the Wiltshire area.

There are still many vacancies for Area Co-ordinators within the village.

Dennis Gill,  June 07

The Sunday evening egg throwers have returned. The breaking of a window is a criminal offence and results in an expense for the householder. This is now more than a nuisance and any information that can be passed on to me or the police would be welcome.

Be aware that distraction burglaries are still occurring within the Wiltshire area.

By next month there should be some news on the implementation of the Neighbourhood Policing Team for the Chippenham North Area.

There are, as I have often repeated, still many vacancies for Area Co-ordinators within the village.

                                                               Dennis Gill,  May 07

The egg throwers are still with us, there have been a number of incidents in the last month; the throwers appear to be older than teenagers, more than one person and to have some form of transport. Any information would be useful.

Be aware that high pressure salesmen are in the area, attempting to sell ‘Domestic Alarm Systems’.

Satellite systems, both installed and mobile, are popular car accessories (especially with the criminal fraternity); always lock your car, even when at a petrol station. Do not leave systems on view as a window can be easily broken and the item stolen.

Some good news, seventy items of garden equipment have been recovered from a house in Cherill, most of it from West Wiltshire. Any resident or gardener who has not reported a burglary can contact the Calne police via 0845 408 7000.

Dennis Gill - Apr 07

Vandalism by throwing of eggs at windows has started again within the village; this causes a certain amount of upset, especially to the elderly and/or those living alone. Additionally a single glazed window has been broken. Prowlers have also been about during the night although no damage has been found. The Distraction Burglars and ‘Cold Callers are still in the Wiltshire area. Please remain vigilant in respect of yourself and your property; remember crime is a 24/7 activity.

                                                                      Dennis Gill - Mar 07

In addition to distraction burglaries, ‘Cold Callers’ ie bogus workers attempting to carry out work and charging extortionate amounts for inferior/or no work, have appeared in the local area.

Please remain vigilant in respect of yourself and your property; remember crime is a 24/7 activity.
