Union Chapel
Here we are at the beginning of another year,
2012 is here, it only seems a very short while since we had all
the hoo ha regarding computers and the supposed imminent collapse
of everything as we new it as we came into the new millennium. Now
here we are another twelve years on.
When I was a boy back in the early 1950’s I
used to enjoy reading comics and the ‘Beano’ and ‘Dandy’ were my
favourites. My elder brother being four years older than me was
much more grown up and read the ‘Eagle’. It was a bit beyond me as
a boy of just five or six, but when he had finished reading his
comic I would look at some of it, very especially the stories of
Dan Dare. These were stories of the future, space men, Martians
and all manner of futuristic contraptions. I remember thinking
then about how fantastic it would be to live in those future
times, how much better life would be, how much more exciting it
would be.
Well now we do live in those times, here we
are, nearly 60 years on, the world has certainly changed. In many
ways life is better, certainly in regard to our standard of living
and things are, in general, easier for us than perhaps they were
for our parents. And in lots of ways we live in very exciting
times, though sometimes rather scarily so. The speed of change is
so very fast and seems to increase with each passing year, and
maybe for the younger folk that kind of change is great, but for
most of us as we get older it seems to change just a little too
much and far too quickly for us to be able to really keep up.
Looking back to those comics and stories of
future days and my own dreams of what the coming tomorrows might
bring, I doubt if anything much is as they portrayed, or as I
thought it might be.
With all the changes and advances that have
come over these years, one of the few things that remain the same
is mankind, we in reality are as we were then, with the same
worries, anxieties, pains and hurts, with the same needs of love
and acceptance, and we are still in need of the Saviour, Jesus
Christ. Amidst all the changes that have been He also remains the
same and is still calling you to put your trust in Him, He who
never changes.
Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and
tomorrow.
